I left my heart in Mexico

Earlier this year, I embarked with 1,200 other people on a very important trip, a mission trip to Mexicali, Mexico. I’ve gone in years past but this year, it really made a special impact on me… and the people I’ve met. Particularly… the kids. You see, I have a heart for children and their beauty. They have such an incredible energy about them as they go about their world and learn everything about it. Despite us speaking different languages, we both spoke a common language – love. Love transcends all in this world. It has the ability to connect people across vast distances. When you make such a connection, as I did earlier this year, your heart yearns for the people that you jealously love. These kids are incredible. They are bright, joyful, and beautiful.

During my stay, I was able to stay with my friend Sarai’s grandmother, Maria. She is the sweetest lady in the world. She made me breakfast in the mornings and before our meal, we would pray.

Since this was a trip I embarked on my own… I was not confined to a schedule so I took the opportunity to wonder around the town of Los Algodones and made some new friends.

July 7th of this year was Taysha’s twelveth birthday. Some other friends of mine from our team had hoped on making the trip but were unable to. I’m grateful that I was able to and surprise her on her birthday. She was at a youth camp and we showed up with pinatas as a surprise. Kids love pinatas. It rained candy!

A few days later, we celebrated Taysha’s birthday. My friend Sarai and I took Taysha and her little sister, Alaysha, to see my friend Angel at his taco stand. It’s amazing to think about but I’ve known Angel for eight years. I first met him in 2006 on my first trip to Mexicali. He is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. He is incredibly joyful and thankful for everything God has done for him. Every time I’ve seen him, he has the biggest smile on his face. I surprised him too, when I pulled up next to his stand. He wasn’t expecting me! He gave me the biggest grin and the biggest hug. He’s a brother to me. Oh, and his tacos are THE best. The best.

No me esperaba!

After the amazing tacos, we went to get some ice cream and milkshakes and just enjoyed each others’ presence.

Since it was Taysha’s birthday, we celebrated and had cake. After that, I took Taysha, her sisters, and cousins for a photo session. What was amazing was having to give directions and posing in Spanish. What I find when conducting sessions and photographing in different countries is that it doesn’t matter the words you say or what you do, but the love in your heart is always conveyed.

The Mexican light and sunset was incredible. It gave such a beautiful feeling. As I created these photographs… I couldn’t help but just be joyful and grateful for the time that I get to spend with these people. Words can’t even begin to describe how much I adore and love them. Each one of them.

Being able to travel is such a blessing. The best part about travel are the experiences along the way and the people you meet. The more I travel, the more I yearn for it. I’ve been around the world and I remember everyone I have had the blessing to meet and share experiences with. This is one in particular that I want to share with you.

Until next time, my family in Mexico, you’re in my heart forever and always.
